At 475Nm of maximum torque it offers substantially more output than the compact sub-300Nm tools while staying lighter and more manageable than the heavy-duty 700Nm+ professional wrenches. It runs on DeWalt’s 18V XR platform – the same batteries used by the DeWalt DCD999 combi drill and the DCF887 impact driver – making it an easy addition for existing XR users.

We tested the DCF894 over several weeks across automotive, construction and general DIY applications. The tool is available body only in the UK at around £170, placing it competitively against similar output tools from Milwaukee and Makita. Here is our full assessment.

Overview and first impressions

The DCF894 is compact for a 475Nm tool – at 165mm in length from the tip of the anvil to the back of the housing, it is notably shorter than most mid-range impact wrenches and sits comfortably in the hand. The body weight without battery is 1.56kg, which is impressively light given the torque output. DeWalt has managed the weight well by keeping the housing tight around the motor.

The grip is textured rubber with a comfortable palm swell, and the trigger pull is smooth with good variable speed response. Three speed/torque settings are selectable via a button on the top of the body – a simpler setup than the four-mode Makita but perfectly adequate in practice. The LED work light wraps around the anvil in a ring configuration rather than a single point, which illuminates the work area more evenly. The anvil uses a detent pin socket retention system rather than friction ring, which is more secure for heavy impacts but requires a dedicated detent pin socket set.

How it performed in our tests

The extra torque over the compact class tools is immediately apparent in use. On M14 structural bolts used in heavy timber construction – the kind of application where a 285Nm tool would struggle – the DCF894 drove and removed fasteners confidently without hunting or hesitation. Wheel bolt removal on a range of vehicles including a transit van with corroded M14 bolts came away cleanly in mode 3 where the compact Makita had required multiple attempts. The ring LED illumination around the anvil is genuinely useful for working in engine bays and tight access points.

Three torque modes cover the range well. Mode 1 is usable for lighter assembly work where overtightening is a risk. Mode 2 handles the majority of automotive and construction applications. Mode 3 is the reserve for stubborn or heavily corroded fasteners. The variable speed trigger is responsive and the soft-start in the lower modes gives useful feel for delicate work. Vibration levels are moderate for this torque class – the DeWalt is notably better controlled than some competitors at the same output level.

The ring LED is a genuine advantage. Working under a vehicle or in an engine bay, the 360-degree ring LED around the anvil illuminates far better than a standard single LED. It is one of those features that sounds like marketing until you actually use it in the dark. If you work in confined spaces regularly, it makes a real difference.

Battery system and runtime

The DCF894 runs on DeWalt’s 18V XR platform, which uses the same batteries as the extensive XR cordless range including drills, jigsaws and angle grinders. XR batteries are widely available at most UK tool retailers and online. The platform runs from 1.5Ah to 6.0Ah batteries, with the 5.0Ah POWERSTACK now also available as a compact high-output option. For impact wrench use the standard 4.0Ah or 5.0Ah are the most practical choices – the 6.0Ah adds useful runtime for extended sessions but increases weight noticeably.

Battery consumption is slightly higher than the Makita DTW285Z due to the higher torque output, but still very reasonable. In testing with a 5.0Ah battery on a mix of heavy and light tasks over approximately one hour, around 50% of charge was used – suggesting a real-world runtime of around two hours per charge under mixed conditions. The XR rapid charger (sold separately) returns a flat 5.0Ah battery to full in around 60 minutes.

Performance and limitations

At 475Nm the DCF894 covers a wider range of applications than the compact class tools, but it still has limits. Very heavily seized fasteners – old suspension bolts on high-mileage vehicles, for instance – will occasionally resist even mode 3 output. For the most extreme automotive applications a higher-torque tool or a pneumatic wrench remains the professional choice. The detent pin socket retention system is more secure than friction ring but does require impact-rated sockets with detent holes – a minor inconvenience if you already have a large friction-ring socket set.

The DeWalt DCF894 is one of the strongest impact wrenches in the mid-range class. The combination of 475Nm torque in a compact, lightweight body – lighter than many 300Nm tools – sets it apart from most competitors at a similar price. The ring LED is a genuinely useful feature rather than a gimmick, and the vibration control is noticeably better than average. For existing XR users the decision is straightforward.

For those not already in the DeWalt ecosystem, the DCF894 is still a compelling option because the XR platform has one of the broadest ranges of compatible tools available – investing in XR batteries gives you access to a full suite of cordless tools including drills, jigsaws and angle grinders.
