Garden lighting serves three purposes simultaneously: it extends the usable hours of the garden into the evening, it creates atmosphere and visual interest after dark that transforms a garden’s character, and it provides security by illuminating access paths and deterring intruders. A well-planned lighting scheme addresses all three without requiring a complex or expensive installation – the range of quality low-voltage and solar options available in the UK now is genuinely excellent.

The first decision is which lighting system to use. Solar, low voltage (12V) and mains each have distinct advantages and are suited to different applications and budgets. Understanding the differences before buying prevents the common mistake of purchasing the wrong system for the intended use. This guide covers all three and helps you choose the right approach for each area of your garden.

Planning your lighting scheme

Before buying any lights, sketch the garden and mark where you want light and what each light needs to achieve. The most effective garden lighting schemes use light purposefully – a path light every 1.5-2 metres to guide movement, a spotlight or two to highlight a focal point, ambient string lights for atmosphere in a seating area – rather than scattering lights randomly.

Always check the IP rating before buying garden lights. IP (Ingress Protection) ratings indicate how resistant a fitting is to water and dust. IP44 is the minimum for covered outdoor use, IP65 is required for exposed outdoor positions and IP67-68 for fittings that may be submerged or subject to heavy rain. Most quality outdoor light fittings sold in the UK state their IP rating clearly – check before buying and do not assume any light branded as outdoor is suitable for all outdoor positions.

Solar lighting

Solar lights are the simplest garden lighting option – no wiring, no electrician required, simply position in a sunny spot and they charge during the day and illuminate at night. The quality of solar lights varies enormously. Budget solar path lights from discount retailers are often dim and unreliable, while quality solar lights from brands such as Lutec, Philips and Solar Centre provide genuinely useful light output and reliable operation.

The limitation of solar lights is their dependence on daylight for charging. In a UK winter with short, cloudy days they often provide only 1-2 hours of reasonable illumination. For reliable year-round evening lighting of key areas a low-voltage or mains system is more dependable. Solar lights work best for supplementary lighting – border spikes, path markers, fairy lights in trees – where failure to illuminate on a cloudy winter night is not a significant practical problem.

Low voltage 12V lighting

Low voltage 12V garden lighting systems consist of a transformer plugged into a standard outdoor socket, with a cable running around the garden supplying 12V to connected light fittings. Because 12V is a safe low voltage, the cables can be run on or just below the surface without the stringent protection requirements of mains cabling. Homeowners can install 12V systems without an electrician for the garden cabling – only the outdoor socket supply requires electrical qualification if one does not already exist.

12V systems offer the best combination of flexibility, safety and light quality for most UK domestic garden lighting applications. The transformer typically includes a timer and dimmer, the fittings are available in a wide range of styles and the light quality from modern LED 12V fittings is excellent. Brands such as Kichler, Garden Lights and Techmar offer quality 12V systems with good component ranges.

Mains powered lighting

Mains 230V garden lighting provides the most reliable and powerful illumination – essential for security floodlights, wall lanterns at entrances and any application where consistent bright light is required. In the UK, any new mains electrical circuit outdoors must be installed by a Part P registered electrician – this applies to the cable supply and any new circuit or socket outside the house. Once the outdoor supply point is installed by a qualified electrician, some mains fittings can be connected by a competent homeowner using appropriate weatherproof connections, but when in doubt use a qualified electrician throughout.

All outdoor mains fittings must be protected by an RCD (residual current device) – either via the main consumer unit or a plug-in RCD adaptor. This is a safety requirement, not optional.

Installation tips

Plan cable routes before installation – decide where cables will run before digging. Mark the route clearly and note the positions of any existing underground services before excavating. Bury cables at the correct depth – low voltage cables should be buried at 150mm minimum, mains garden cables at 500mm in open ground, deeper under driveways. Use armoured cable for mains outdoor runs. All cable connections in outdoor positions must use IP68-rated waterproof connector blocks – standard electrical connectors allow water ingress and are not safe outdoors.

Smart garden lighting

Smart garden lighting systems allow control via smartphone, voice assistant or automated schedules. Philips Hue Outdoor, LIFX Outdoor and Lutron all offer quality smart outdoor lighting that integrates with most home automation platforms. The practical benefits are the ability to set automatic dusk-to-dawn schedules, to dim lights remotely and to integrate garden lighting with indoor lighting and security systems. Smart garden lighting is particularly valuable when combined with a smart security camera system – both can be controlled from the same app and set to the same schedules.
